Information on Special Character Preference
Background
The Integration Act 1975 created a partnership between the State and the Catholic Church by integrating private schools into the state system in such a way as to preserve and safeguard their 'special character' and the roll numbers of neighbouring state schools.
Guidelines
Preference in enrolment is given to those children whose families have established a specific connection with the Special Character of the school. Those families who do not meet the criteria noted below are designated as 'non-preference' children; at St Joseph's the limit for non-preference is 10% of the total approved role.
Preference Criteria for Enrolment:
Special Character preference is established by:
- Obtaining a signed preference card by the Parish Priest after a specific connection to the Catholic Church has been established; and
- A desire to have the child educated in the Catholic Faith principles.
The specific connection can be established through the following ways:
- A child has been baptised in the Catholic Faith.
- A child's parent/parents are baptised Catholics.
- A child's grandparent/grandparents are baptised Catholics.
- Transfer from another Catholic school.
Non-Preference Enrolment
Where a child does not meet the Special Character criteria, parents may apply to have the child enrolled as part of the 10% non-preference specification.
Waiting List
A waiting list is held by the Principal's office. The Principal, in conjunction with the Parish priest will offer positions of enrolment as vacancies occur. Should a non-preference child be declined enrolment, the parents may write to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St Joseph's to request that their application is reconsidered.

Conditions of Enrolment
By enrolling your child at St Joseph's you commit to your child's participation in religious education programmes. Participation in preparation for the sacraments such as First Communion, First Reconciliation and Confirmation is not mandatory.
This commitment includes that you will pay the Special Character Levy/Catholic Attendance Dues (CAD) and a small voluntary donation in addition to the school fees.
Notification
St Joseph's has a procedure of on-going admissions throughout the year. The Principal reviews applications regularly, and you will be notified promptly after the school receiving your application.
